হবিগঞ্জে রেল সেতু ডুবে যাওয়ার আশঙ্কা থাকায় শ্রীমঙ্গলসহ সিলেট অঞ্চলের সঙ্গে সারা দেশের রেল বন্ধের ঘোষণা দেওয়া হয়েছে। ঘোষণার পর পরই সিলেট থেকে ঢাকা ও চট্টগ্রামে চলাচলকারী ৬টি ট্রেন চলাচল বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।
বৃহস্পতিবার (২২ আগস্ট) দুপুরে বাংলাদেশ রেলওয়ে শায়েস্তাগঞ্জের ঊর্ধ্বতন উপ-সহকারী প্রকৌশলী (পথ) সাইফুল্লাহ রিয়াদ স্বাক্ষরিত এক বার্তায় ঘোষণাটি দেওয়া হয়।
শায়েস্তাগঞ্জ জংশনে কর্মরত মাস্টার গৌর প্রসাদ দাশ পলাশ বলেন, ‘পরবর্তী সিদ্ধান্তের আগ পর্যন্ত সিলেট বিভাগের রেলপথে রেল যোগাযোগ বন্ধ থাকবে।
তিনি আরও বলেন, ‘ভারী বর্ষণের প্রভাবে হবিগঞ্জে খোয়াই নদীর পানি বিপৎসীমার ওপর দিয়ে বইছে। পানির স্রোত সিলেট থেকে ঢাকা-চট্টগ্রাম রেলপথের ‘খোয়াই সেতু’ ছুঁইছুঁই। সেতুটি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হওয়ার শঙ্কা রয়েছে। ফলে রেল যোগাযোগ বন্ধের সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে।
শেষ খবর পাওয়া পর্যন্ত হবিগঞ্জ জেলায় সাড়ে ৬ হাজার পরিবারের ২৫ হাজার মানুষ পানিবন্দি হয়ে পড়েছেন। এসব এলাকার মানুষের জন্য ১১৬টি আশ্রয়কেন্দ্র প্রস্তুত করা হয়েছে।
